There is a lot of truth in all the above posts. But the one with the most truth in it is the one that said it is the older adults from both towns that won't let go of a grudge.

Good example here:..My grandmother (who is now desceased) was a rabid supporter of the Dawgs. I went to school and played at PV. She'd call me the night before our games and tell me that she "hoped I didn good, but that we got our a$$es beat"..lol..regardless of who we were playin. So, every x-mas I'd give her a different 7 x 5 print of Phil in a frame..and she'd curse me etc etc..it was funny. One day, not too long ago (last x-mas) I did the same thing and got the same reaction so I asked her why she hated PV like she did. She told me when she was 15, Appy went to BSG to play the Buccaneers...and "them s.o.b.s threw eggs at us...and I hate em to this day for it"...lol..sje graduated from appy around 1945..lol.

He's only been coach there for two years now. Best thing to do is have patience in his coaching. Things will get better.
beast is right-it's not the kids but the parents who can't let go! Consolidation is not new to Wise County. There once was a few schools East Stone Gap and Big Stone Gap and they went away and what was the result-Powell Valley-8 time state champs in football. Imagine what a program if you took the hard nosed kids from Appy with all those athletes from PV. Haha it would be a tough team that could run.
Some kids will go to Norton just simply because its closer for the ones who live in Josephine and in around those areas. Im not sure how many are left, but I know Appy still runs a bus toward Norton.
But if (when) consolidation occurs, there probably won't be a school in Norton.
Dang, now that's a hard core Granny! lol

Norton has told it both ways. It will be interesting to see how/if the old districts are split. These things made hard for the WCSB to hold an argument at times. One was "JJK is overcrowded" but the simple change of a bus route to send kids to another school would never be considered by earlier boards. Before long, with this kind of logic and arguement, they fell apart. Hope the new group can do better.
Norton has a dwindling tax base, and won't be able to sustain a small school into the future. I don't look for much change from the incoming board. I suspect that, within 10 years, I'll have Spuds, Wyatt, and a few others over to grill out before we go take in the local football game! lol
There has been a group from Appy that has been looking for a "fair deal" since 92. If somebody ever gets this right, there might not be as much opposition.
